THE USE OF WEBQUEST IN LANGUAGE TEACHIN



11.   What is WebQuest?
webQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which some or all of the info that learners interact with comes from resources on the internet” (Dodge, 1995). WebQuests integrate technology into the curriculum and make it beneficial for students

22.   History of webQuest
The idea of WebQuest was orriginally Bernie Dodge’s idea who is a professor San Diego State University.
He came up with this idea after he prepared a task (WebQuest) for pre service teacher and it went so well that he decided to do it. 

33.   Types of WebQuests
a.    Short term: Takes 1-3 class periods to complete. The goal is knowledge, acquisition and integration. Learners will have made sense of the significant amount of new information they managed (Dodge, 1995).
b.    Long term: Takes one week to one month to complete. The goal is extending and refining knowledge. Learner will have analyzed knowledge, transformed that knowledge, and demonstrated an understanding by creating something others can respond to (Dodge, 1995).

44.   The Goal of WebQuest
There are two goals of webquest, they are :
a.    The instructional goal of a short term WebQuest is knowledge acquisition and integration.
b.    The instructional goal of a longer term WebQuest is extending and refining knowledge

55.   Benefits of the use of WebQuest in language Teaching
There are some benefits WebQuest for language Teaching, they are:
a.    Increase student motivation
b.    Cooperative learning
c.    Authentic tasks
d.   Address real world problems or issues
e.    Timely sources
f.    Single discipline or interdisciplinary
g.    Higher-order thinking skills
h.    Develop thinking skills
i.     Use many resources.
j.     Encourage students to explore new ideas and ways to present these idea.

66.   The Elements of WebQuest
a.    Introduction.
 It introduces an activity to students and raise their interest. It should orient the learner to what is going to happen. Also it Should grab learners and make them want to continue.
b.    Task
Provides a goal and focus for student/s. Describes what the student/s will have completed by the end of the assignment (product, presentation, etc.).
c.    Process
-it clearly describes steps
-teacher lets the learners know the process to go through to accomplish task
-Teacher can also provide help, comment, and advice.
d.   Information Resources
-Teacher list selected websites for learners.
-teacher may use external and internal links.
-Besides, teacher may include non- Web resources: books, worksheet, video, etc.
e.    Evaluation
-The measure is really needed in the evaluation.
-The measure must fit to the goal and objectives. Actually, there is one appropriate  evaluation that is using evaluation rubrics which is often best for authentic assessment.
f.    Conclusion
Teacher summarizes and reminds learners what they learned and accomplished by completing the WebQuest and encourage them to extend their thinking.
